CHELLIE PINGREE (D-ME) FIVE TERMS IN OFFICE, ENDORSED BY THE SIERRA CLUB AND OCEAN CHAMPIONS… YET SHE HAS DONE NOTHING TO PROTECT CASCO BAY

The Portland sewer systems dump hundreds of millions of gallons into Casco Bay annually.  This untreated mix of household sewage, street run-off, chemicals, medical and industrial waste, and assorted byproducts is pouring into the Atlantic Ocean today; and under current plans, this will continue for decades to come!

Where is Portland’s Voice in Congress?  Our representative, who is proud to be endorsed by numerous environmental groups and eagerly takes their campaign donations, has been quiet on the topic of sewage in Casco Bay. The hypocrisy is nauseating!

From East End Beach in Portland, Willard Beach in South Portland, Crescent Beach State Park, Kettle Cove, in Cape Elizabeth, to Scarborough Beach, Ferry Beach, Pine Point Beach, Higgins Beach in Scarborough, and south to Old Orchard Beach, and East to Popham Beach, Sewall Beach and Head Beach in Phippsburg; take a swim in Maine’s waters and you run the risk of sucking in some of Portland’s discharge.

Untreated sewage contains E.coli and salmonella which present significant health hazards. These toxins threaten our food chain from lobsters and clams to fish, muscles, and oysters. Destroy our lobster industry and watch our tourism industry end.

Portland has been struggling to fix the problem for 20-years and they are only half-way done. Their current plan would help reduce the storm-water problem by a mere 10%.  So far, the cost of these repairs has been borne on the backs of property owners with ever-increasing water bills.

Piecemeal repairs over the next 20 years are not acceptable solutions while the health and wellbeing of Maine people and the state’s economy are at risk.

We have to be better stewards of our natural resources than what the current plan offers.

To fix the problem completely and forever Portland needs financial help from the federal government. Rep Pingree, the 5-term Democrat, representing every beach on the Maine Coast South of Belfast, has done nothing to help the City of Portland.

From her position on the Appropriations Committee she has sent taxpayer money to a private yacht company in Rockland, so they could remodel a lounge, and sent federal funds to refurbish the runway in Rockland where she arrives by charter jet… but she’s accomplished nothing to help the environmental disaster happening right now in Portland Harbor.

Holbrook went on to add:

“Here’s another example of Ms. Pingree’s Ruling Class attitude.  She gladly takes endorsements and campaign cash from national environmental groups, yet ignores this huge problem here in her own district. That is just wrong, and it is why I’m running for Congress: Maine needs a better representative in Washington.”

Sincerely,
MIH
